With plenty of options, it is somewhat difficult to understand which type of bit is perfect for fulfilling the needs. It is essential to consider how often you plan and what you plan to use a drill bit for, as well as the type of material you are going to use on before buying it.

Here are some of the types of drill bits that are used most regularly which you will find these days:

  • Twist Drill Bits
  • Countersink
  • Masonry
  • Auger
  • Spade/Flat Wood/ Paddle
  • Tile
  • Hole Saw
  • Forstner
  • Brad Point / Dowel / Spur Point Bit

Twist Drill Bits

Twist bits are one of the most widely used because of multi-purpose usage and economical price. They come in many styles and variations and can be used on different types of materials such as wood, metal, plastic, etc. They will suit best for drilling small holes.

Countersink

Countersink bits drills holes of conical shape. It has a smaller hole at midpoint which cuts through the material. They would work well for soft materials like woods and plastics. But, they are not best suited with metals.

Masonry

Masonry drill bits are perfect for stiff materials like brick, concrete, etc. These bits commonly work using a hammer drill. It breaks up the material while the rotating action expels debris through the flutes.

Auger

Auger bits work best for drilling large, deep holes in wood or materials of similar types. To create a defined round cut, the screw tip first makes the hole and later it pulls the bit through the material. It is typically designed with extra large flutes that help remove the chips from the hole.

Spade/Flat Wood/ Paddle

These bits are suitable when making large and smooth bottomed holes in wood. They should be used with a power drill press. They have a flat blade with a sharp-end tip in the middle that marks the surface area and retains a steady movement.

Tile

Tile bits have carbide tips look like a spear. It helps to reduce cracks, making them perfect for boring tiles and ceramics. You can use it with drills press at slow speed as well while they can also be used with a handheld drill.

Hole Saw

Hole Saw is used to cut large, fixed width diameter holes in wood or metal. The hole saw looks like an open cylinder that contains sharp edges around the circumference. The hole saw can eliminate material from the edge contrasting most other drill bits that remove waste material from the interior of the hole.

Forstner

The Forstner bit drills even bottomed holes in wood. It is best used with a drill press to get better positioning and full control of boring movements. Be sure to remove the bit regularly to clean away dust material, as the bit contains no system for clearing chips from the hole.

Brad Point / Dowel / Spur Point Bit

These drills have a central tip along with two raised spurs. It confirms that the drilling movements remain straight. The bit cuts through wood very fast by creating smooth and precise holes when used with a drill press.

It will make you sure that you pick the right thing for your projects every time.
